We have submitted a detailed planning application for the development of a new science block at Xaverian College, Manchester. The proposal forms part of the college’s response to increasing demand for places, particularly in STEM subjects, which have seen a 44% rise in student numbers since 2018.
Xaverian College, an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted-rated Catholic college in Rusholme, currently accommodates nearly 3,000 further education students. However predicted growth arising from the college’s strong reputation alongside general population growth has indicated that the student population will reach an upper limit of 3,120 by 2028/29. Yet the college is faced with the spatial challenge of being enclosed tightly in a densely populated part of south Manchester, with little scope for outward expansion. To cater for this predicted growth and to maintain high-quality pastoral care, the college strategy is to reconfigure its existing facilities.
The proposed development, located within the Victoria Park Conservation Area, involves the demolition of the Sunbury Building, an 1840s unlisted building which no longer fulfils the college’s needs due to space limitations, accessibility issues, and unsuitable internal conditions.
In its place, a fantastic state-of-the-art new science building designed by Pozzoni Architecture will be constructed, housing four new science labs and eight demonstration labs, to significantly improve the college’s capability to deliver exceptional teaching in STEM subjects.
Prior to submission, the college engaged with local ward councillors and well as the planning and conservation officers at Manchester City Council, incorporating their feedback into the final proposal.
